How do I know  if an exchange is right for me?

Each home exchange is unique; a bond of trust must be built as you get to know your home swap partners and their family through e-mails, letters or phone calls.  Most people traveling on an exchange love the idea of no cost accommodation especially because through their communications ahead of time, they find themselves not staying at a strangers home, but at new found friends, and they will be staying in your home.

Some people are better suited to home exchange than are others. For some, exchanging saves on hotel bills, allowing them to afford more destinations they wish to visit.  For others it's comfort, spaciousness or a lifestyle choice. In some isolated or rural locations, home exchange may provide the only available accommodations. 

If the thought of having strangers in your home, sleeping on your bed  bothers you then swapping homes may not be the thing for you. You may want to save money in other ways and stay in inexpensive hotels or vacation home rentals when you travel.  Keep in mind that other guests before you use the beds you sleep in at a hotel or rental. Your exchange home bed has probably only been slept in by one or two other people on a regular basis; compared with the hundreds or thousands of people who sleep in the average hotel bed.

If you are adventurous, love to save money while traveling and really don't mind giving your house a thorough cleaning before leaving on your house swap, then a home exchange is worth a try.    No need to be embarrassed about clutter, although most exchangers have organized clutter in their homes.  All that most travelers want is a home swap base that's clean, comfortable and holds the family numbers in reasonable comfort.

"Once bitten by the vacation home exchange bug, many people choose to swap homes in different locations every year. Some have made over 50 vacation house swaps over several years.  Although the majority of home swappers trade once a year, it is possible to fit two or three swaps in a typical year. Even local trades are possible–and practical–for those who don’t want to travel far."
