Aigne House Description
Maison des Belles Reves, built in 1697 and renovated a few years ago, is situated in the walls of the 1000 year-old Circular Village of Aigne. Windows on both sides of the house fill it with sunshine! Lovingly decorated by the artist-owner with priceless antiques and her colorful works of art as well as prized Guatemalan weavings, the house can bring your best dreams to life.
Because of the antiques and the set-up of the house, only adults are invited. On the rez chausse (ground floor), there is a living room that leads out to a large lovely terrace, a large dining room with enormous fireplace, a fully furnished kitchen, and a full bathroom. The first floor contains the master bedroom with another fireplace and ensuite bath, a large sitting room with another fireplace. The owners use this room as an exercise room and office, and a guest bedroom, with a large stove. On the second floor is the third bedroom and another room that will be a 4th bedroom, but is currently not furnished. The 3 bedrooms have, respectively, two 190cm beds, two twin beds that can be put together to make a king, and a queen-sized bed. Linens are furnished.
Aigne is one of a handful Circular Villages in the Minervois, where sunshine and schist combine to provide luscious reds and memorable muscats for those of us who love fine wine. Wine-tasing is the best! The village of Aigne has some unique features. One of my favorites is that one can buy eggs at the post office! Yes! One of the local farmers brings his eggs, and there is a sign-up sheet for next month’s poultry delivery. On Thursdays the “toot-toot” at about 10:30 announces yet another farmer bringing his fresh vegetables. After his arrival is that of the baker, then the fish monger and finally the butcher.
Olonzac with its market is nearby and Tuesday is market day. Wednesday there is a large market in nearby Lezignan-Corbiers, and Thursdays and Sundays Narbonne is the place to go for both history and shopping at the open-air market. If antiques interest you, there is a large “marche aux puces” in Montpellier on Sundays, as well Villeneuve-les-Beziers, near Beziers.
Hiking is wonderful through the vineyards. We love to bike from village to village, often go to Narbonne to swim at the Olympic-sized pool, and frequently go to Collioure, with its 4 coves and "Chemin des Fauves" tour of where Matisse and friends painted in 1904 - 05.
The walled medieval cite’ of Carcassonne is a short drive, as are many other lovely historical towns, such as Minerve, and Caune Minervois.

I am an athletic 60 yr-old with 1 lab. I currently have 2 homes in the south of France, although one in Lagrasse is for sale and needs to be available for viewing. Lagrasse can sleep 5 and Aigne can sleep 4. We also have a beautiful solar home near Telluride, CO, and I escape this winter as it is spectacular, but is only accessible via snow mobile or snow shoe from Dec - March.
